Mountwood Park is located 12 miles east of Parkersburg on Volcano Road off Rt.50. For those who would like to hit the Rail Trail it's a six mile ride to the Rail Trail at Petroleum, follow Short Run (on our map) to Myer's Fork and turn right, follow Myers Fork to Goose Creek which crosses the Rail Trail. For all of the Mountwood rides we will be camping at the Horseman’s Camp and trail riding; rides leave camp at 10:00 am unless otherwise noted on the events page, however the trails are well marked and you may ride at your leisure. November 1st the camp will be winterized through April 1st 2012, the water will be turned off, and that means no bathrooms however the electric will remain on. The trail use will be restricted to Sundays only beginning with the start of gun season till after Christmas. Official word from the park is that the only closures will be during rifle deer hunting season; pretty much November 21st thru Dec 31(except Sundays) and during Turkey Seasons both spring, April 23rd to May 19th, and fall, October 22nd to November 5th trails are closed until 1pm (checked the DNR website) the camp water will be off from Nov 1st to the first part of April, but electric will stay on, any campers or riders must bring your own water. Ruthie 304-588-1407 and Park Attendant Lorrie 304-588-1403 larthur@wvdsl.net are taking care of camp/stall reservations. Check with them on reserving a stall or spot with electric. Pay your fees with envelopes located near the collection box at the Sugarbush barn. A drop box is located in the camp for convenient fee collection, please place your appropriate fees in the envelopes provided along with contact information, length of stay etc. DAY RIDING bridle fee is $3.00 per day, or $20.00 for the season; which runs May 1 to November 1.
Backroads Pizza is nearby and will deliver to the camp. Electric is limited, however construction to expand electric sites is underway. Sixteen stalls are available as well as plenty of tie lines, and woods are available for your own tie lines in the shade. Generators and portable corrals are welcomed. City water, restrooms, showers and horse bathing area available. Campfires are allowed in burn rings, please do not place the burn rings on the asphalt. We have worked very hard on this camp and the trails, there is still much work to be done, most trails are well marked now and beautiful color coded laminated maps of the trails are available. In order to recover the cost of production and development we ask for a nominal fee of $10 each, these are available for purchase through the Administrative Office at Mountwood Park. Please be patient as work continues to improve your riding and camping experience. While Mountwood will manage the camp, WCHRC, Inc. will continue to make improvements and maintain much of the camp and the trails. Volunteers are welcomed on our work days, ask how you can help.
